One of the biggest moves of the NBA offseason is officially complete.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have acquired All-Star point guard LaMelo Ball and guard Josh Green from the Charlotte Hornets in a blockbuster trade that could dramatically reshape the Western Conference. In return, Charlotte receives Naz Reid, an unprotected 2033 first-round draft pick, first-round pick swaps in 2028, 2029, and 2030, along with second-round picks in 2029, 2032, and 2033.
The move signals Minnesota's commitment to chasing an NBA championship.
After falling short of its ultimate goal last season, the Timberwolves aggressively pursued another star to pair alongside Anthony Edwards. Team executives believe Ball's elite playmaking and ability to create offense will elevate an already talented roster.
LaMelo Ball arrives in Minnesota as one of the league's most exciting point guards.
The 2021 NBA Rookie of the Year has averaged 20.8 points, 7.3 assists, and 5.7 rebounds during his career. While injuries have limited his availability at times, Ball remains one of the NBA's premier passers and a dynamic offensive weapon capable of changing a game with his scoring and court vision.
For the Timberwolves, the addition of Ball gives them one of the league's most explosive young backcourts.
Pairing Ball with Anthony Edwards creates a duo that combines elite athleticism, scoring, and playmaking. Minnesota hopes Ball's ability to facilitate the offense will allow Edwards to become even more dangerous as both a scorer and off-ball threat.
The trade also marks the end of an era in Charlotte.
Since being selected by the Hornets in the 2020 NBA Draft, Ball became the face of the franchise and one of the NBA's most recognizable young stars. Although he helped spark a turnaround for the organization, Charlotte's front office ultimately decided that adding Naz Reid and a substantial collection of future draft assets better aligned with its long-term vision.
Naz Reid gives the Hornets an established frontcourt presence after developing into one of the NBA's most productive big men. Combined with the draft capital acquired in the deal, Charlotte now has additional flexibility as it continues building around its young core.
As for Minnesota, expectations immediately rise.
The Timberwolves are no longer simply a playoff contender—they're pushing all of their chips toward championship contention. The success of this trade will largely depend on Ball's health and how quickly he develops chemistry with Edwards and the rest of the roster.
One thing is certain: this blockbuster has changed the landscape of the NBA.
The Timberwolves believe they've found the missing piece.
Now it's time to see if LaMelo Ball can help bring a championship to Minnesota.
