NEW YORK — Madison Square Garden witnessed one of the most dramatic games in NBA Finals history Wednesday night as the New York Knicks completed a stunning comeback to defeat the San Antonio Spurs 107-106 in Game 4, taking a commanding 3-1 series lead. The victory puts New York just one win away from its first NBA championship since 1973.
After falling behind by as many as 29 points and trailing 76-49 at halftime, the Knicks looked destined to head back to San Antonio with the series tied. Instead, Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby spearheaded a furious second-half rally that will be remembered for years in New York sports history. Brunson finished with 36 points and seven assists, while Anunoby delivered 33 points and knocked down seven three-pointers before providing the game-winning tip-in with just 1.3 seconds remaining.
The Spurs appeared to have complete control for most of the night. Victor Wembanyama posted 24 points and 13 rebounds, while San Antonio's offense overwhelmed New York during a dominant first half. But as the game tightened in the closing minutes, the Spurs failed to execute when it mattered most.
One of the biggest disappointments came from De'Aaron Fox. The veteran guard played a key role throughout the series, but his late-game decision-making proved costly. With the Spurs desperately trying to hold onto a narrow lead in the final seconds, Fox failed to deliver the type of clutch execution San Antonio needed. His inability to create a quality scoring opportunity and close out the possession opened the door for the Knicks' final push, ultimately ending with Anunoby's game-winning basket.
For a player brought to San Antonio to help complement Wembanyama in high-pressure moments, the final sequence represented a missed opportunity. Championship teams rely on their stars to make winning plays late, and Fox was unable to provide that spark when the Spurs needed it most.
Now facing a 3-1 series deficit, San Antonio must regroup quickly before Game 5 back in Texas. Meanwhile, the Knicks are one victory away from ending a 53-year championship drought and delivering one of the most memorable title runs in franchise history.
Game 5 is scheduled for Saturday in San Antonio, where the Spurs will fight to keep their championship hopes alive while the Knicks look to complete their historic journey.
