When the New York Knicks needed someone to step up in Game 2 of the NBA Finals, Mikal Bridges answered the call.

The veteran forward delivered one of his best performances of the postseason Friday night, scoring 20 points while adding six rebounds and six assists to help the Knicks escape San Antonio with a dramatic 105-104 victory over the Spurs. The win gives New York a commanding 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals and puts the franchise just two victories away from its first championship since 1973.

While Karl-Anthony Towns led the Knicks with 21 points and 13 rebounds, it was Bridges who provided the steady presence New York desperately needed throughout the night. With Towns battling foul trouble and Jalen Brunson struggling to find his shooting rhythm, Bridges emerged as the Knicks' most consistent offensive weapon.

Bridges finished the game shooting an efficient 8-for-13 from the field and knocked down four of his six attempts from beyond the arc. His ability to stretch the floor created crucial spacing for the Knicks offense and prevented the Spurs from loading up defensively against Brunson and Towns.

The performance was a major bounce-back effort after a relatively quiet Game 1 in which Bridges scored just nine points. Rather than allowing that performance to linger, the former Villanova star responded with one of the biggest games of his career on basketball's biggest stage.

His impact went beyond scoring. Bridges played a significant role defensively, helping limit Spurs star De'Aaron Fox while contributing to the Knicks' overall defensive effort throughout the contest. His versatility on both ends of the floor once again showcased why New York invested heavily to acquire him and why he has become such a critical piece of the franchise's championship pursuit.

The timing of Bridges' breakout could not have been better. With the Spurs making several runs throughout the game and Victor Wembanyama delivering a much stronger performance than he did in Game 1, the Knicks needed someone capable of matching San Antonio's energy. Bridges did exactly that, providing timely baskets and veteran leadership whenever the momentum threatened to swing in the Spurs' favor.

For Bridges, the performance also carried personal significance. Five years ago, he helped the Phoenix Suns reach the NBA Finals only to watch a 2-0 series lead disappear. This time, he hopes history will be different as New York prepares to host its first NBA Finals game in decades.

The Knicks now head to Madison Square Garden with a 2-0 series advantage after winning both games in San Antonio. If New York ultimately captures the Larry O'Brien Trophy, Bridges' Game 2 performance may be remembered as one of the defining moments of the franchise's championship run.

Sometimes stars win games. Sometimes role players do.

On Friday night, Mikal Bridges was both.
