The NFL could not have scripted a better way to begin the 2026 season.
Just seven months after battling in Super Bowl LX, the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks are set to meet again in a highly anticipated Week 1 showdown at Lumen Field in Seattle. The matchup will serve as the NFL Kickoff Game and immediately place two of the league's top contenders back under the national spotlight.
The last time these two teams met, it was the Seahawks celebrating a championship.
Seattle defeated New England 29-13 in Super Bowl LX, capturing the franchise's second Lombardi Trophy and denying the Patriots a remarkable turnaround season under head coach Mike Vrabel.
Now, the Patriots will have an opportunity to begin their revenge tour on the same field where the Seahawks will unveil their Super Bowl championship banner.
The season opener is scheduled for September 9 at Lumen Field and will be nationally televised as the marquee game to kick off the NFL season.
Patriots Looking for Redemption
New England enters the season with plenty of motivation.
The Patriots shocked the football world during the 2025 campaign, going from the bottom of the AFC East to AFC champions in just one season. Quarterback Drake Maye emerged as one of the league's brightest young stars and helped lead New England all the way to the Super Bowl.
However, the Patriots struggled offensively against Seattle's defense in the championship game and never fully recovered after falling behind early.
Expect New England to use that disappointment as fuel entering Week 1.
Seahawks Begin Title Defense
For Seattle, the opener represents the start of another championship journey.
The Seahawks enter the season as defending Super Bowl champions and will enjoy one of the league's strongest home-field advantages as they begin their title defense in front of a packed Lumen Field crowd.
Seattle's defense played a major role in its championship run and will once again be tasked with slowing down Drake Maye and the Patriots' offense.
If the Seahawks can duplicate their Super Bowl performance, they could send an early message to the rest of the NFL that they remain the team to beat.
One of the Most Anticipated Openers in Years
The NFL rarely gets a Week 1 matchup with this much history attached to it.
This marks one of the few times in league history that the previous season's Super Bowl participants will meet again in Week 1. The storyline is simple: the Patriots want revenge, while the Seahawks want to prove their championship victory was no fluke.
For football fans, it's the perfect way to open the season.
For the Patriots and Seahawks, it's an opportunity to immediately make a statement.
And for the NFL, it's a rematch that could feel every bit as intense as the Super Bowl itself.
