SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Wagner Thunderbirds delivered one of their strongest performances of the young 2026 season Friday night, defeating the Del Rio Rams 27-7 in a non-district matchup.

Wagner entered the contest looking to bounce back after opening the season with a 21-14 loss to O’Connor. The Thunderbirds responded with an impressive performance on both sides of the football, controlling the game and keeping Del Rio's offense from finding much rhythm.

The victory came at an important time for Wagner as the Thunderbirds continued to build momentum heading into the heart of the season.

Del Rio entered the matchup with a 1-1 record after a dramatic 35-32 victory over San Antonio Stevens the previous week. However, the Rams struggled to carry that offensive momentum into Friday's game against Wagner.

Wagner quarterback J. Hughes was among the team's top performers, helping lead an offense that consistently found ways to move the football. The Thunderbirds' defense also played a major role, holding Del Rio to just seven points.

The 27-7 victory marked a significant turnaround for Wagner and gave the Thunderbirds their first win of the season.

For Del Rio, the loss dropped the Rams to 1-2 on the season. The Rams will now look to regroup and prepare for their next challenge.

Wagner, meanwhile, can use the victory as a building block moving forward. With the regular season continuing to develop, Friday night's performance showed that the Thunderbirds have the ability to compete when all three phases of the game are clicking.

Final: Wagner 27, Del Rio 7
